The loser of yesterday's election in German land Saxonia-Anhalt is the so called "firewall", symbol of the insanity of German politicians of the traditional parties. Here, what I wrote about it on April 8th, 2025, in the German internet paper Achse des Guten:

The policies of the new German government are based on excluding over twenty percent of German voters, whom the incoming chancellor intends to keep from any participation in the democratic process through a "firewall." Psychologically speaking, the "firewall" is a sign of deep-seated insecurity. It serves as a form of self-suggestion for its creators, who constantly need to reaffirm their own progressive convictions. Apparently, some Germans are so afraid of becoming Nazis again that they are taking rigid protective measures.

And erecting walls. Like in the Middle Ages. Out of hysteria, out of fear of infection with the Nazi virus. Against which they apparently feel no immunity. The panic is directed at a party that—apart from two or three foolish statements by some of its politicians—bears hardly any resemblance to the Nazis. Rather, the word "firewall" evokes Nazi Germany's lost war, after which the major German cities lay in ruins, from which firewalls protruded everywhere, in some places—such as the former capital of the Reich, Berlin, where I grew up—for decades. In the east, they were still blackened from the fire of the bombing raids; in the west of the city, they were cheerfully painted or planted with flowers, but even there, the steep, empty walls, the abrupt ends, the shattered houses are still visible today.

A firewall as a protective wall? What are they trying to protect themselves from? Not from fire or bombs, but from a growing segment of their own population. That's why this process is so worrying. It's erected against democracy and pluralism. My concern isn't for the new right-wing party they want to undo with the firewall, because it will benefit from this childish attempt at denying reality. It has only ever grown stronger through the boycotts of the political class. So the firewall concept is also counterproductive in the sense of its own originators. Can you imagine anything more foolish?

"Firewall" is a key term for German self-destruction. A firewall means amputation. The amputation of - according to the latest polls - a quarter of their own population, almost 25 percent. The party they voted for is accused of polarization, of division—but what is the "firewall"? It is division itself. It is the knife used to cut the tablecloth. The rabid attempt to impose order. A symbol of the mental confusion that has gripped Germany's political class. The confusion emanating from the "firewall" is palpable, it damages Germany's reputation abroad, will also harm the economy, and deepen the country's crisis. The "firewall" prevents cooperation and understanding, the constructive collaboration of all segments of the population. There is so much urgent work to be done, instead, walls are being built across the country… A government that starts like this might as well give up.

Die “Brandmauer”: Symbol der Geistesverwirrung

Die Politik der neuen deutschen Regierung basiert auf der Ausschließung von über zwanzig Prozent der deutschen Wähler, die der kommende Kanzler durch eine „Brandmauer“ von jeder Beteiligung an den demokratischen Prozessen fernhalten will. Psychologisch gesehen, ist die „Brandmauer“ ein Zeichen tief sitzender Unsicherheit. Sie dient der Autosuggestion ihrer Erfinder, die sich ständig ihre eigene progressive Gesinnung bestätigen müssen. Offenbar haben manche Deutsche solche Angst davor, sie könnten wieder Nazis werden, dass sie rigide Schutzmaßnahmen ergreifen.

Und Mauern errichten. Wie im Mittelalter. Aus Hysterie, aus Angst vor der Infektion mit dem Nazi-Virus. Gegen den man sich offenbar nicht immun fühlt. Die Panik gilt einer Partei, die – abgesehen von zwei oder drei dummen Äußerungen einiger Politiker – kaum irgendeine Ähnlichkeit mit den Nazis aufweist. Eher beschwört das Wort „Brandmauer“ den verlorenen Krieg Nazi-Deutschlands herauf, nach dem die großen deutschen Städte in Trümmern lagen, aus denen überall Brandmauern ragten, mancherorts – so in der ehemaligen Reichshauptstadt Berlin, wo ich aufwuchs – noch Jahrzehnte lang. Im Osten waren sie immer noch schwarz vom Feuer der Bombennächte, im Westen der Stadt wurden sie heiter bemalt oder bepflanzt, aber man sieht sie auch dort bis heute, die steilen, leeren Wände, abrupten Abbrüche, die zerschnittenen Häuser.

Brandmauer als Schutzmauer?Wovor will man sich schützen? Nicht vor Feuer oder Bomben, sondern vor einem wachsenden Teil der eigenen Bevölkerung. Deshalbist der Vorgangbesorgniserregend.Errichtet sich gegen Demokratie und Pluralismus. Meine Sorge gilt nicht der Partei, die man durch die Brandmauer ungeschehen machen will, denn sie wird von diesem kindischen Versuchder Realitätsleugnung profitieren. Sie ist bisher durch den Boykott der anderen immer nur stärker geworden. Das Brandmauer-Konzept ist also auch noch kontraproduktiv im Sinne der eigenen Erfinder. Kann man sich etwas Dümmeres vorstellen?

„Brandmauer“ ist ein Kennwort deutscher Selbstzerstörung. Brandmauer meint Amputation. Heute die Amputation eines - nach neuesten Umfragen - Viertels der eigenen Bevölkerung. Die Partei, die sie gewählt haben, wird der Polarisation, der Spaltung bezichtigt – aber was ist die „Brandmauer“? Sie ist Spaltung schlechthin. Sie ist das Messer, mit dem das Tischtuch zerschnitten wird. Der rabiate Versuch, Ordnung zu schaffen. Ein Symbol der Geistesverwirrung, die Deutschlands politische Klasse erfasst hat. Die von der „Brandmauer“ ausgehende Konfusion teilt sich atmosphärisch mit, sie schadet Deutschlands Ansehen im Ausland, wird auch der Wirtschaft schaden, die Krise des Landes vertiefen. Die „Brandmauer“ verhindert Kooperation und Verständigung, die konstruktive Zusammenarbeit aller Teile der Bevölkerung. Es gäbe so viel dringendes zu tun, statt dessen zieht man Mauern durchs Land… Eine Regierung, die so beginnt, kann es eigentlich gleich lassen.
