Every year during the High Holidays (especially during the seemingly endless rituals of Yom Kippur), I reflect on the strange contradiction between the commandment to rest on Shabbat and holidays and the effort required to observe the holidays in accordance with halakha. I recently wrote about this for a cultural magazine: “Shabat: The Dilemma of the Day of Rest.” I just posted this essay in the archive of my blog.

Jedes Jahr während der Hohen Feiertage (insbesondere während der scheinbar endlosen Rituale von Jom Kippur) denke ich über den seltsamen Widerspruch nach zwischen dem Gebot, am Schabbat und an Feiertagen zu ruhen, und dem Aufwand, der erforderlich ist, um die Feiertage gemäß der Halacha einzuhalten.
