After a week packed with work and exciting affairs, I stumble into Shabbat half-conscious and confused. I couldn’t even recite the Kaddish properly in synagogue, although I’d said it a hundred times before. Now, on Saturday evening, after the Torah reading, lunch with my wife, and a long afternoon nap, I feel somewhat relaxed again. Ritual acts repeated regularly become part of the body’s biological rhythm. This evening I proof-read the article on the founding of the State of Jordan, which I had written at the request of a German-language daily newspaper. Will the editors accept it?

Jordan is a fabricated state. The global anti-Israel propaganda spread by left-wing and Muslim groups is based on the claim that the State of Israel is a late colonialist creation that has plunged an already established, inherently peaceful Middle East into constant turmoil and war. The Zionist founders are portrayed as foreign invaders who allegedly stormed into the largely stable structures of a long-established Islamic cultural sphere with destructive force. This narrative ignores the fact that the Islamic states in the region are themselves all new entities—political creations or arbitrary inventions of the former colonial powers, Great Britain and France. The history of the “Kingdom of Jordan,” a state accepted by the West, can help illustrate this point.

Nach einer Woche vollgepackt mit Arbeit und aufregender Ereignisse taumele ich halb bewusstlos und verwirrt in den Schabbat hinein. Ich konnte in der Synagoge nicht einmal das Kaddisch richtig rezitieren, obwohl ich es schon hundert Mal zuvor gesprochen hatte. Jetzt, Sonnnabend Abend, nach Torah-Lesung, Lunch mit meiner Frau und längerem Mittagsschlaf, fühle ich mich wieder einigermassen entspannt. Regelmäßig wiederholte rituelle Handlungen gehen in den Bio-Rhytmus des Körpers ein. Abend las ich den Text über die Entstehung des Staates Jordanien, den ich auf Bitte einer deeutsch-sprachigen Tageszeitung geschrieben hatte. Wird ihn die Redaktion akzepzieren?

Jordanien ist ein erfundener Staat. Die globale Anti-Israel-Propaganda linker und muslimischer Gruppen gründet sich auf die Behauptung, der Staat Israel sei eine späte kolonialistische Gründung, die einen bereits etablierten, an sich friedlichen Mittleren Osten in ständige Unruhe und Kriege manövriert hätte. Die zionistischen Gründer gelten als fremde Eindringlinge, die mit zerstörerischer Wucht in die weitgehend stabilen Strukturen eines schon lange zuvor bestehenden islamischen Kulturkreises vorgestoßen wären. Dabei wird ausgeblendet, dass die islamischen Staaten der Region selbst allesamt Neugründungen sind, politische Kreationen oder willkürliche Erfindungen der vorübergehenden Kolonialmächte Großbritannien und Frankreich. Die Geschichte des „Königreichs Jordanien“, eines im Westen akzeptierten Staates, kann dabei helfen.
